What is a Sales Tax Assessment?
A sales tax assessment is, at base, an accusation by your state tax authority that you have not paid or remitted a sufficient amount in sales tax as against your sales for the previous year. The way the authority determines your sales for the previous year varies by state and by industry, but things like missing a sales tax filing or neglecting to collect sales tax in a state in which you have nexus can be possible causes for an assessment. They can also stem from claimed exemptions that the authority believes are invalid.
I have received a sales tax assessment, what should I do?
